Moving…but only a URL away!

January 30, 2013

It might be easier to move to a new URL, but it takes a completely different skill set! At least there's no packing with this move.

Years ago, in fact so long ago that “Human Resources” in any corporation was still called “Personnel”, I was told by somebody at Polaroid, “moving is the second highest stress producing situation, second only to death of a loved one!” Having moved several times in my life, no matter how much I thought we had […]

I got a comment on a blog post yesterday and it’s going to down as one of my favorite comments…It was from Matthew Danner: “Today, I went to the beach front with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean […]

Quote of the Week: January 28, 2013

January 28, 2013

Thomas J Watson was the Chariman of the Board for IBM and in March 1955 he was the cover story for Time Magazine.

I meet so many photographers who are working so hard to find success that if it walked through their front door right now they wouldn’t recognize it! Success isn’t something that just shows up on your desk one morning. It’s the result of a never-ending spirit to keep getting better and making yourself stronger. “Would […]

Four Friends, $1000 of Sushi and a Photograph

That's Wendy Saunders, Calvin Hayes, the restaurant Ninja, Tony Corbell and me. Catch Clay Blackmore in the background loading in another roll of film. (yeah, film)

We all have that one drawer somewhere in our lives, might be a kitchen, a desk or a dresser, but it’s filled with treasures! It’s our own mini-version of an episode of “Hoarding” only in this case we’re hoarding memories. For me that drawer is in my desk and in the process of cleaning it […]

Ten days ago I wrote a post about taking a stand on things you believe in. It’s a great trait of so many people I’ve grown to admire in and out of our industry. Well, it’s Sunday Morning and if you’re reading my blog, that puts your passion for this industry right up there with […]

Scott Bourne ran this post a long time ago and I came across it recently and just started laughing. Well, that got me thinking about whether or not Scott had covered it all. So, I added five more signs of my own and it was just too easy! I then realized that, while we all […]

Every day technology adds new tools to the way imaging artists can create and capture the ultimate image. Over and over again, Profoto packs so much information into just a few minutes. You’ve all heard me say it before, you won’t become a great photographer only watching videos anymore than you could learn to drive […]

Direct Mail? It Ain’t Dead Yet!

Two great examples out of my "Best of the Best" Collection over the years. Gene Martin, sadly passed away a few years ago and I miss catching up to him at many of the key conventions. He was an outstanding commercial photographer specializing in portraits of musicians. Joe and JP Elario are good friends from Albany and I love the clever way they worked in the message on this card. Both cards were over-sized around 6x9.

I know not everybody feels this way, but for most photographers the first quarter of the year is the slow season, at least in terms of shooting assignments. That makes it the perfect time to think about a variety of topics to help build your business, a recurring theme in my posts for the last […]

You need a side order of fun on your plate every day!

I know all the quotes I post are always from famous people, those literary giants out there along with the movers and shakers who we think of as leading the charge for life, passion, education, sales, marketing etc. Well, this morning’s quote isn’t from any of the above. It’s just from some knucklehead who was […]

Somewhere around fifteen years ago I met Michele Celentano. We were all headed to WPPI on the same flight out of Newark Airport. Little did I know she’d become a great friend, an outstanding photographer and the first Dean of Students for Skip Cohen University. In fact, the only thing I did know was she […]

Asking for Help…

January 23, 2013

Every lifeguard knows how to toss a swimmer in trouble a life buoy. In the same respect everyone in your network is there to help when you need it.

I’ve written about this topic on other blogs in the past, but there’s no such thing as writing too much about it. What triggered the thought today was coming home from Imaging USA thinking about the number of photographers I had a chance to talk with. I love the way this industry supports each other. […]

There’s been a lot of great discussions over the years on the advantages of a formal education in photography. Some of the finest photographers in the world never attended a full time educational institution with the intent of majoring in any aspect of imaging. But that’s exactly my point today. Photography is no longer a […]
